Anna Muzychuck lost her titles to defend women’s rights. Nowadays, she thinks chess is a way to claim it all over the world
Anna Muzychuck is an international grand master in chess whose best results are three times world champion, two timeseuropean champion and two times ucraniane champion among women. She became even more famous around the world due to her decission of refusing the opportunity to renovate her titles.
She started to play chess when she was just a little girl. As she said this happened thanks to her parents who were also chess players and they taught her and her sister, Mariya how to play chess properly. Their work as chess coaches turned out to be enough to convert their talented daughters into the only sisters in the world of chess who have become world champion.
She got better at this game and nowadays she considers chess her profession. She dedicates almost all day trying to boost her strategies but she also spends some time in other sports as running or swimming because chess tournaments also requires being in good physical conditions.
In her career she has played in several chess clubs all over the world which she was invited to. This year she has been invited by Solvay to play in the Spanish chess championship. Due to this invitation we were able to ask her about the decission she made.
The last world championship took part in Saudi Arabia, a country where woman rights are quite limitated so women who wanted to take part in the tournament had to follow several rules. These rules were against what she believes.
“It was a very difficult decission because, of course, I would like to play, but I belive in what I do and that’s the important thing”.
She confessed us that she wasn’t very sure because she didn’t know how people would react. She took all her confidence and she wrote a facebook post announcing that she was not going to take part in the competition. This post got a lot of support so she realized that she was right on her decission and now she does not have any regrets.
“it was very important because we realized that we are not alone.”
Even though she knew she was going to lose her titles she remained on her point of view.
“First it was a very bad feeling because I had the chance to go and to win again but I thought it was more important to show this message.”
She continues trying to improve her level in chess and she hopes one day she will get her titles back.
We also asked her about having two different competitions for males and females, an idea that can resault a bit controversial in the society we live in. As she has said to us, this was created not because of women and men are supossed to think different, it had in count physical conditions.
Men are in better physical conditions than women. Good physical conditions allows them to train more hours because they do not get tired as fast as women do.
Also this two competitions exist because there are more men starting playing chess.
“If you come to any chess club there are more boys than girls in avarage.”
Finally we request her to give an advice to young girls who are starting to play chess:
“My first advice is that you will have to learn the game a little bit how it goes to get interested. You must understand chess as any other proffession and know that it is not for everybody, so if you don’t like it’s better that you don’t teach so much. If you like you continue and this the most important thing to have a wish to play. I encourage them to get in this world because you learn how to plan a strategy, to force the consequence, to respect your opponent,to be reponsible for what you do and also to develop your memory”.
